Based on stats alone, Tucson is technically as dangerous as Des Moines, Iowa. At least as far as violent crime goes. Would you be afraid of moving to Des Moines? Really? Did you know that violent crime is actually worse in Springfield, Illinois? (And who freaks out about Springfield? Nobody I’ve ever heard of.) Tucson is a little, teensy-tiny, worse than Denver, Colorado, re: violent crime, and I’ve never heard of anybody paralyzed by fear of Denver. Property crime — statistically, and taking the Joe Burrow Definition Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this entire city into account — Tucson is twice the U.S. average. Which might give you pause. Yet did you know that property crime is actually higher in Louisville, Kentucky? (How many people in Louisville are trying to move out due to property crime?) Tucson has worse property crime than Portland or Seattle, yet not by a whole lot, and people are lined up like the proverbial turds on a log to move to Portland and Seattle. (The Pacific Northwest, in fact, has a pretty stellar reputation and is like the great popular Insta-meme of American places to live. But statistically, Tucson and Seattle are virtual twins, crime-wise. Compare the violent crime and the property crime rates: they’re practically identical.)

I’m not saying Tucson is perfect — I’ve literally only been there as a visitor — but my gut feeling is that if you avoid dangerous and stupid behavior (drugs, prostitutes, walking around South Tucson at 2 a.m. — whyyyy???!!!) it’s no worse than cities that people are surprised to find have a crime problem. And surprisingly better than some cities people rarely think about at all. I drove somewhat near the Joe Burrow Definition Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this U.S.-Mexico border — again, as a tourist, so I don’t claim to have anything more than a superficial tourist impression of the place — but frankly I thought that area was amazingly beautiful. (I drove down there from Phoenix for a day and stayed for a week.) People were as nice or ordinary as people I’ve met anywhere else in this country. If I thought it was a hellhole full of uneducated hicks and violent gang warfare, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have revisited. And I don’t think I’d be considering moving out of the #5 “fittest city in America.” (Snooze. Booooooooorrriiingggg…… get me a coffee soon.)
